Visiting the UK

Arrived this morning in the UK for a few days. Had a good trip, was upgraded to economy plus and had no one sitting next to me, which meant that I slept well. Only problem was that there strong tail winds so the flight was only just over 6 hours.

Am writing this with Lils, to show her the blog and how it works. A quiet day with Sarah, repaired her flat tire and then took a nap with Ivor.

More later.

No Labouring

Am having a very relaxing Labour Day weekend. I took a few days off work to do all those chores that never seem to get done. I upgraded my PC to Windows Vista, recovered all of my photos that I thought had been lost (absolutely recommend Best Buy's Geek Squad), and went to Jennie and Michael's redux wedding. (The first was in the UK.)

It was in Bel Air, MD - about an hour north of Baltimore. Had a great time. A touch hungover on the way back, but that is the sign of a good wedding.

Last night I went to the ground breaking of my friends Diane and Khalid's new wine bar Cork (www.corkdc.com), which will be opening in early November.

Ciao

Visiting St Michaels

Had a great weekend sailing to St Michaels, a very old Maryland town about 26 nautical miles south of Annapolis on the Easter Shaw of the Chesapeake bay. We averaged a good 5 knots in 10 to 15 knot winds on the way down, and had to motor on the way back on Saturday.

I went with Giles Howson and an alum from his college Anna, who is on a travel scholarship for 3 months in the US. After arriving in St Michaels, we had great crabs - a Chesapeake speciality.

The only downside was that we tried to fly the spinnaker, and in the process broke the wippet pole.

Will post photos later when I get them.

Am at work for a couple of days then back on vacation until Sep 4th.

Sailing ... again

So, if you are a little bored of all of the sailing stuff, sorry here is some more! Had a great day on the Bay with Juliana, Rupa and Isabel. The weather was perfect - clear skies a good steady 10 to 15 knot wind and almost no chop.

We sailed out of Back Creek, down to the Thomas Point Lighthouse, up the Academy, around Spa Creek and then back to Mears.

It was probably one of the best sails this year. We made Thomas Point in less than hour, averaging a good 5 knots under sail.

They are restoring the light house and we saw a bunch of people from the Smithsonian on the rock. Click here for the restoration story. If you want to see more photos, please visit my Picassa Albums by clicking here.

Next weekend I am off for an overnighter to St Michaels with Giles. Cannot wait .....

Alls well that ends well

I had a bit of a health scare this week, although all is ok. I had some chest pains and the doctor was a little worried that it was serious. In fact, it turns out that there is nothing wrong - after many, many EKGs and a heart stress test. I was at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlingtong ~ and I must say they all of the Doctors and Nurses were excellent.

I have also updated my site, which you may have seen if you are reading this. I am retiring my home server and moving to a hosted environment, and leveraging Google Picasa for my photos, as well as Blogspot for my blog. Google has moved on so much that it is much easier than trying to post photos by myself.

I am experimenting with Twitter having read quite a few articles about it. Twitter is a text message broadcast environment where you send quick updates or information to a defined group of friends. It is a bit hard to experiment with as I am not aware of anyone else who is using it.

Oh and .....

.... I renamed the boat!

Chuffed

The sailing season has well and truly begun. Today was very exciting. Although there was little wind I was able to fly my spinnaker for the first time. Another first - I managed to reverse into my slip ... So much easier than how I had been doing it. Thanks to Jennie, Mike and Mark.

Boat renamed

I have finally, officially renamed the boat to "Chuffed". Failed to get out on the bay today as it is blowing a hooey. Hopefully next week will be better.

The newest Jacobsen

I had a weird Twighlight Zone moment on Thursday. I was wondering when Ruth & Simon were going to have the baby when, at almost that exact moment, I received a text announcing they were at the hospital and Hughie (pictured) was on the way!

Sailing in January

How ridiculous is this! Sailing single handed in Jan. It was 71 degrees and sunny. There were quite a few boats out on the bay. I met up with Simon on the Severn River. The great thing was that I was able to get into the marina by myself.
